Garbage Disposal

Garbage Disposal repair, diagnosed properly

Disposals are the appliance most likely to be replaced when they did not need to be. A unit that hums is usually jammed, not dead.

Common faults

Garbage Disposal problems we fix

If you recognise the symptom, tell us when you call. It narrows the fault before we arrive.

  • Hums but doesn't turn

Jammed. The motor is fine and it's trying. Clearing it is usually quick, and a unit that jams repeatedly is telling you something about what's going down it.

  • Completely dead, no sound at all

Tripped internal reset, a failed switch, or the motor. The reset button is the first thing to check and solves it more often than people expect.

  • Leaking under the sink

Where it leaks decides the repair. The sink flange, the dishwasher inlet, or the body seal — and only the last one usually means replacing the unit.

  • Very loud, rattling

Something in the chamber that shouldn't be there, or worn mounting. We check before assuming damage.

  • Drains slowly or backs up into the sink

Often a drain-line blockage past the disposal rather than the disposal itself, which is worth knowing before replacing a working unit.

  • Smells bad no matter what goes down it

Usually buildup rather than a fault, and there's a proper way to clear it.

How we diagnose it

The $89 tells you what's actually wrong

We clear jams, test the reset and the switch, and identify exactly where a leak is coming from before recommending a replacement. If the unit genuinely has reached the end, we'll say so and swap it, but we don't start there.

You get a firm price before any work starts, and the $89 comes straight off the bill when you go ahead.

  1. 1
    We find the fault

    Tested, not guessed at.

  2. 2
    You get a firm price

    Before anything is opened up.

  3. 3
    You decide

    Including when we say don't.

  4. 4
    Backed 90 days

    Parts and labor both.

Questions

Garbage Disposal repair questions

Is a disposal worth repairing or should it just be replaced?

Both are reasonable depending on the fault. Jams and switch problems are easy repairs. A leaking body seal or a seized motor usually means replacement, and we'll be straight about which you have.

My new dishwasher won't drain and the disposal is new too.

Check the knockout plug. On a new disposal it has to be removed before the dishwasher drain is connected, and it's missed often enough that we look for it first.

Can you install a replacement disposal?

Yes, if that's the right answer after the diagnostic.

What shouldn't go down a disposal?

Fibrous vegetable waste, grease, and anything hard. Most of the jams we clear are one of those three.

Extremely happy with response and service quality. Expecting to leave a message because it was Memorial Day, I was pleasantly surprised when the phone was answered. Appointment made for the next day for my washing machine which was making ugly noises. John arrived right on time and discovered what turned out to be a foreign object under the drum - then charged me only for the call out which was a bargain. Honest and fast and responsive.
