Freezer

Freezer repair, diagnosed properly

Standalone freezers and freezer drawers fail differently from the freezer compartment in a refrigerator, and a chest freezer in an unheated garage fails differently again. What they have in common is that you usually find out after the food has already thawed.

Common faults

Freezer problems we fix

If you recognise the symptom, tell us when you call. It narrows the fault before we arrive.

  • Food is thawing but the unit sounds like it's running

The compressor running doesn't mean it's cooling. A sealed-system fault, a failed start relay, or a stuck defrost cycle all sound normal from across the room.

  • Heavy frost or ice building up inside

The defrost heater or defrost thermostat. On a manual-defrost unit it can also just be a door seal letting humid air in continuously.

  • The unit cycles on and off far more often than it used to

Usually a thermostat or a temperature sensor reading wrong, telling the compressor to work when it shouldn't.

  • Freezer in the garage stops working in summer

Many freezers aren't rated for unconditioned spaces. Above a certain ambient temperature the thermostat never triggers properly. That's often a setup problem rather than a broken appliance, and we'll tell you which.

  • Water on the floor around the unit

A blocked defrost drain, a door seal that has stopped sealing, or ice that built up and then melted during a power interruption.

  • Door won't seal or keeps popping open

A worn gasket, a hinge that has dropped, or ice buildup on the frame stopping the door closing flush.

How we diagnose it

The $89 tells you what's actually wrong

We check the gasket, the ambient conditions and the defrost system before assuming the sealed system. Garage and basement freezers get a specific look at whether the unit was ever suitable for where it's installed, because replacing a compressor on a freezer that will fail again next July helps nobody.

You get a firm price before any work starts, and the $89 comes straight off the bill when you go ahead.

Freezer evaporator coil packed with frost after a defrost heater failure
Frost packed around the evaporator. Once it blocks the airflow, the compartment stops cooling even though the compressor is running fine.

Questions

Freezer repair questions

Can you repair a chest freezer as well as an upright?

Yes, both, plus freezer drawers in built-in refrigeration.

My garage freezer quits every summer. Can that be fixed?

Often, yes. Many units aren't rated for unconditioned spaces. There are both repair and setup answers depending on the model, and we'll tell you which applies to yours.

Is a freezer worth repairing?

Frequently, more so than a refrigerator. Freezers are mechanically simpler, and the common failures are serviceable parts rather than whole-unit problems.

Everything thawed. Can you tell me what went wrong?

Usually yes. Whether it was the appliance, a power interruption or a door left ajar leaves different evidence, and it's worth knowing before it happens again.

Extremely happy with response and service quality. Expecting to leave a message because it was Memorial Day, I was pleasantly surprised when the phone was answered. Appointment made for the next day for my washing machine which was making ugly noises. John arrived right on time and discovered what turned out to be a foreign object under the drum - then charged me only for the call out which was a bargain. Honest and fast and responsive.
