Dryer

Dryer repair, diagnosed properly

Most dryer calls are one of two things: it isn't heating, or it's heating fine and the air has nowhere to go. The second one is a vent problem rather than an appliance problem, and it's also a fire risk, so we check it either way.

Common faults

Dryer problems we fix

If you recognise the symptom, tell us when you call. It narrows the fault before we arrive.

  • Runs but doesn't heat at all

Heating element or thermal fuse on an electric dryer, igniter or gas valve coils on a gas one. A blown thermal fuse is usually a symptom of restricted airflow rather than the root cause.

  • Takes two or three cycles to dry one load

Almost always the vent run, not the dryer. A long, crushed or lint-packed duct is the single most common cause we see, and it's also the one that starts fires.

  • Squealing or rumbling while the drum turns

Drum rollers, the idler pulley, or the rear drum bearing. It gets worse the longer it runs, so it is worth catching early.

  • Drum doesn't turn but the motor runs

A snapped drive belt. Common, quick, and not worth replacing a dryer over.

  • Shuts off partway through a cycle

Overheating from restricted airflow, or a failing thermostat cutting out. Same family of cause as the two-cycle problem.

  • Clothes come out smelling scorched

Stop using it and call. That usually means heat with insufficient airflow, and it's the condition that precedes a vent fire.

  • Won't start at all

Door switch, start switch or thermal fuse. All three are quick to confirm with a meter.

How we diagnose it

The $89 tells you what's actually wrong

We test the heat circuit and the airflow together, because they cause each other's failures. Every dryer job includes checking the vent run, and if the duct is the real problem we'll tell you that instead of selling you a part you don't need.

You get a firm price before any work starts, and the $89 comes straight off the bill when you go ahead.

A dryer stripped to the drum on a real call. Heat and airflow faults look identical from the outside, so we test both.

Questions

Dryer repair questions

Do you service gas dryers as well as electric?

Yes, both.

My dryer takes forever. Is that the dryer or the vent?

More often the vent, especially in townhomes and older homes with long duct runs. We check both before recommending a repair.

Do you clean dryer vents?

We check and clear the vent as part of diagnosing a heat or drying-time problem. If the duct run itself needs replacing we'll tell you what's involved.

Is it worth repairing a dryer?

Usually yes. Dryers are mechanically simple and the common failures — elements, fuses, belts, rollers — are serviceable parts rather than sealed assemblies.

The thermal fuse blew and was replaced, and it blew again. Why?

Because the fuse was doing its job. A repeat failure means the airflow restriction that caused it was never fixed. That's what we go looking for.

Extremely happy with response and service quality. Expecting to leave a message because it was Memorial Day, I was pleasantly surprised when the phone was answered. Appointment made for the next day for my washing machine which was making ugly noises. John arrived right on time and discovered what turned out to be a foreign object under the drum - then charged me only for the call out which was a bargain. Honest and fast and responsive.
